The Indian film industry is usually synonymous with Bollywood, but this is not truly the case. While Bollywood does have a huge presence and fan following both in India and abroad, it is not the be-all and end-all of Indian cinema. There is a whole other tier to it – regional cinema.
India is a country with a kaleidoscope of diverse cultures and indigenous languages, which means films, are made to cater to all this diversity as well. While they may not have as much widespread blockbuster success like their Bollywood counterparts they are still relevant in this context.
That is not all, now with in the age of YouTube and Vimeo, cellphones with 4K recording capabilities and the widespread tendrils of the internet Indian cinema has a new scion – web cinema. People making movies targeted at these internet portals and all the potential viewership they serve up on a platter.
Finally, indie or independent cinema cannot be ignored either. There are directors and filmmakers making movies in all sorts of languages and styles that don’t fit into the mainstream but are just as important in the scheme of things overall.
Indian cinema is raking in the moolah
A study conducted by KPMG and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) called The Future: now streaming’ explains that theatres or exhibitors have received a boost in advertising revenue to the tune of 281% and increasing the audience reach could really help ramp up gross revenues in the industry. The study said, “The industry needs to look at innovative models for building exhibition infrastructure and the government needs to revisit the archaic laws to make cinema more accessible to the audience.”
The study also spoke about the changing roles of the industry and how important a role the content of the film now plays. “Content has become indispensable for the success of a movie and it is imperative that the producers take cognisance of the changing tastes of the consumers and reassess their budgets and business models to create profitable films.”
Clearly then, some new blood with fresh ideas and a more nuanced perspective is needed to take this already successful industry to the next level.
A change in pattern
Currently, the Hindi film industry parallels a monarchy, where actors’ children become actors and producers’ progeny end up as producers. This has led to a situation where the people making and working in films may not be the most competent people out there. As the study suggested, with the focus shifting to a strong narrative when it comes to the success of a film, a different, more educated approach seems to be the order of the day. This is where Seamedu comes in.
