Nomadland
Nomadland won three awards at the 93rd academy awards. It won Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress for Frances McDormand from a total of six nominations. Chloé Zhao won the Academy for Best Director and created a record of becoming the first woman of colour and second woman to claim the title of Best Director. The entire cast of the movie were non-professional actors and it was filmed with a crew of just 25 people. McDormand, one of the producers of the film found Chloé Zhao at the Toronto Film Festival.
The film is based on the non-fiction book Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century. The 93rd academy awards contained some notable changes this year. First of all, the all-black producing team was nominated for best picture, the first time two actors of Asian descent received a nomination for best actor and it was the first year that two women were nominated for best director.

Around Round
Around Round was based on a play Vinterberg has written while working at the Burgtheater in Vienna. He got more inspiration from his daughter Ida, who had told stories of the drinking culture within the Danish youth. The original title of the movie Druk means “drinking” or “boozing” in Danish. The movie won the award of the best international feature film.
For Thomas Vinterberg, the dance at the end is like a mirror of the journey that Martin was on: “It’s a mix of emotions: Part of him wants to fly, part of him wants to drown.” The director’s wife gave the idea to include the song “What a Life” in the end.
However, the official selection of the 2020 Cannes Film festival was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Two Distant Strangers
Two Distant Strangers win the Oscar for a live-action short film. Co-directed by Travon Free and Martin Desmond Roe, “Two Distant Strangers” has been the subject of controversy. The critics argued that in the film there was a repetitive depiction of anti-black violence that falls under the umbrella of “Black trauma porn” is “more triggering than thought-provoking.” Free told The Times that the story is meant to convey the “cyclical nature of the trauma we experience just living in this country on a day-to-day basis.” He also added, “It’s a metaphor for what it is like to be Black in America. It is the loop.”
Compton’s Travon Free is the first black filmmaker to win the Oscar for a live-action short film.

My Octopus Teacher
My Octopus Teacher is a movie of its kind. it was produced by Craig Foster who started filming in the year 2010 and the film took ten years in the making and was the first South African nature documentary to be a Netflix Original. His wife Indian environmental journalist Swati Thiyagrajan also joined Foster as the production manager for the film. The movie was directed by Pippa Ehrlich and James Reed.
