Gaming enthusiasts, tech-savvy youngsters and digital artists often find it difficult to figure out what career or profession would satisfy their creative and professional needs and desires. The massive rise in the popularity of gaming across all age groups has indirectly resulted in youngsters getting interested in the prospect of game development as a career.

One of the biggest subsets or segments of the entertainment industry, gaming has become a sizzling hot profession today, in terms of the opportunities that exist in India, the ‘reward’ aspect of the career and the scope to flourish in the longer term. The advent of the internet and unprecedented access to technology has given rise to a massive demand for games and the industry is rapidly growing further.

Creating a new game is no child’s play. The game industry is evolving at a rate of knots and as more and more games are created, the extent to which skills like design, fine art, software development, coding, audio and programming are involved is expanding, too.

Designing games – What do game designers do?

To put it simply, game designers are the architects of the games they create, since they are actively involved in the planning of each and every element of the game. From the game itself to the rules, environment, content, storyline, characters, levels and everything else, game designers basically visualize the entire concept on which the game is built.

Once it is all clear on paper, they work towards creating the game and running it with the assistance of professional game developers, programmers, animation artists, music producers and sound engineers. They work in tandem with this entire team to ensure that their idea is being executed as planned. Another important aspect of a game designer’s job is to conduct a market research to gauge the feasibility of the game they are conceptualizing.

A game designer is like the director of a movie – he/she applies the art of design and the science of understanding player psychology to come up with ideas and concepts that will get the audience hooked on, and then they oversee the implementation of these ideas! Game designers ideate concepts for online games, PC games, console games, board games, live action games and even card games. In fact, the modern corporate word is even trying to ‘gamify’ the learning experience for training their employees! The career options, then, are boundless for aspiring game artists and designers.

Game designers contribute to the Game Design Document (GDD), which acts as a point of reference for everyone who is involved in the project. In essence, this document covers everything related to the game and can answer any questions that the other team members may have while working on the project.

This in turn has led to an increase in the number of courses and colleges that offer education in this field. Ideally, if you wish to pursue a long-term career in game design, it is best to get a degree in the subject. A Bachelor’s in Game Design can help you step into the world of games with adequate knowledge about how games are created, along with substantial practical experience. For example, Seamedu School of Pro-Expressionism offers a full-fledged degree in game art and design at its Pune campus, training you in the theory as well as practical aspects of designing different types of games.

How long does it take to become a game designer?

While a typical game design degree course is three to four years long, there are other options available to aspirants, where they can learn the art of game design or game art quicker. For instance, the diploma in game art that Seamedu offers at its Pune campus is a relatively shorter program as compared to the aforementioned degree course.
