A guest lecture by Indian documentary film maker Madhavi Tangella“God is the director when it comes to shooting a documentary film,” said Madhavi when she was questioned by a student.Everyone in the packed classroom was confused and Madhavi promptly pegged in saying that most of the footage acquired by a documentary film maker is decided by God because it’s about capturing a story which is not fully in control of the film maker. Professional audio recording software, better known as a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) has now become the norm in sound studios the world over. Whether used in sound recording, music or post-production, this best recording software is all the rage. It isn’t just a tool used by slick, professional studios either, because everywhere, from that ukulele player on YouTube to the local school’s in-house production, you will probably find a computer running audio production software to help create and edit sound in today’s digital age.Audio recording was first discovered way back in the 1800s, although the digital age began a lot more recently than that. The 1980s were crucial in recording studio software history as this was the period when MIDI or Musical Instrument Digital Interface first came into play. Soon, legendary pieces of code like Steinberg Cubase, Emagic Notator, and Cakewalk first came into being. In ’89, Digidesign created sound tools, which is the spiritual birth of audio software as we know it. The first iteration of Pro software Tools came to being in 1992, and Logic Audio and Cubase created, updated software to match its pioneering multi-track layout and notation capabilities.

The Indian film industry is usually synonymous with Bollywood, but this is not truly the case. While Bollywood does have a huge presence and fan following both in India and abroad, it is not the be-all and end-all of Indian cinema. There is a whole other tier to it – regional cinema.India is a country with a kaleidoscope of diverse cultures and indigenous languages, which means films, are made to cater to all this diversity as well. While they may not have as much widespread blockbuster success like their Bollywood counterparts they are still relevant in this context. That is not all, now with in the age of YouTube and Vimeo, cellphones with 4K recording capabilities and the widespread tendrils of the internet Indian cinema has a new scion – web cinema. People making movies targeted at these internet portals and all the potential viewership they serve up on a platter.
